"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

To meat or not to meat

Most of you know I have been actively trying to buy and eat more local foods over the last few months. One of my stumbling blocks has been finding locally-raised meat. I am pleased to say that I have found a source that will deliver locally-raised beef, pork lamb and poultry to a Toronto location for me to pick up.

This is all kinds of yay. Except, somehow, over the last few months, both Grant and I have found ourselves not loving the meat so much. We have definitely cut down on our portions, and just recently, when I have prepared meat, I have found myself thinking that all I really needed was the incredibly yummy vegetables that I have prepared.

Grant is in total agreement. He thinks that the veggies are extra good because I am such a fabulous cook. That may be, but I also suspect that buying locally and organically is a big factor too. We have experimented a lot more with new vegetables lately and have discovered wonderful new favourites.

I think I will go ahead and buy some of the local meat. Who knows? I may find that it revives my former love of meat products. If it doesn't, then I suspect we will continue eating less and less meat. Eventually, we may decide to formally eliminate it from our diet, but only time will tell.

We don't eat a lot of meat, but what we do buy is from a local farm that raises grass-fed, organic beef and chicken, and it is to die for. The difference between the local stuff and the meat you get at the supermarket is astronomical, especially if you can find someone who raises heritage breeds of stock.

Well you know I am on the 'not meat' side of the question, but if the choice is between no meat and small amounts of local, organic, free-range meat, then I think you'll win either way. :)

Yeah, more and more we are using local meat as a component of a bigger meal. It has been a really nice switch.

And I love veggie ground round. It is so much quicker and easier than beef.
